Cakes, Cookies and Crunk

Music and food. Is there any better combination?

Food has long been a hot topic in the music industry, with feasts regularly presented in music videos, and plenty of songs about tasty treats enjoying Billboard success.

We know that food is mostly for nourishment, but sweet indulgences like fruit flans and Black Forest cakes speak to our tastebuds, and our grumbling stomachs.

Music on the other hand is food for the soul. From the soulful sounds of Amy Winehouse to the crooning voice of Chris Isaak, Michael Jackson’s funky beats to the up-tempo pop punk Green Day, the power of music is undeniable across all genres.

With cakes being the most popular dessert category of all time, we felt it appropriate to highlight five of the most underappreciated songs that pay homage to the affable sweet treat.

DNCE – Cake by the Ocean

Your eyes haven’t deceived you. The middle Jonas brother did in fact enjoy success in his side-band DNCE with this super catchy single. Not only is the track totally catchy, whoever would have thought to tuck into a cake at the beach? Genius. “I’m going blind from this sweet, sweet craving” and “I keep on hoping we’ll eat cake by the ocean” certainly has tongues wagging in preparation for dessert. Then there’s the P. Diddy reference speaking to our RnB sensibilities, which is the cherry on the cake for fans of the popular 90s rapper.

B-52s – Cake

An early 80s track from the album ‘Mesopotamia’, this chirpy pop song from quirky band B-52s is a self-proclaimed worship of the deliciously decadent sweet treat. The band has fun while listing all their favourite cakes by the song’s crescendo, from pineapple upside-down cake to chocolate devil’s cake before singing the ingredients needed to make said cake, this is one of the most fun baking songs of the 1980s.

Van Halen – Poundcake

Whether metaphorical or not, there’s no denying this American hard rock band will leave you wanting a cheeky bite of poundcake by the song’s end. With lyrics like “Cookin’ up an old time, long lost recipe”, “shake it up, bake it up nice” and “I sure love my baby’s poundcake”, there’s no arguing this is a great dessert / music crossover anthem.

Flo Rida & 99 Percent - Cake

This is one song to play on repeat, and nothing says obsession like repetition – just ask Flo Rida. “Cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake / I only came for the cake” he raps, which leaves us wondering, what flavour?

Katy Perry – Birthday

Ah, Katy - the modern songstress with a sense of humour and killer writing talent has done it again. No, we’re not talking about her other food hit ‘Bon Appetit’, but this smash from the 2013 album ‘Prism’. With a subtle nod to the celebratory dessert in lyrics like “I know you like it sweet / so you can have your cake / give you something good to celebrate”, ‘Birthday’ reminds us that celebrations always call for a mix of tunes and treats to create that perfect party atmosphere.
